Slugs, yuck. Slugs are not sexy. You can trap them using a can containing milk buried in the ground with a small opening for the slug, but because the slime trail they leave contains enormous quantities of eggs the slug population will be replenished. Slugs can also be deterred by surrounding plants with lime or soot or mulching with chipped bark.

The biological approach is to encourage hedgehogs, birds and frogs and toads as predators.
