This web site was originally called Film Council dot Com, which was developed in 1999, in cooperation with Boolean Consulting Ltd to provide a forum for discussion and facilitate interest in the medium of film. After an unsuccessful ICANN ruling on the 29th November 2000, and some 2 years later (25.11.2002) the domain name filmcouncil.com was taken by the law firm Withers. In order to maintain the current user base and prevent as much disruption as possible the site was renamed Film Council dot Net.

Visitors to the site are encouraged to participate by becoming council members. Revenue to maintain and develop the site is provided through advertising and sponsorship.

This web site does not provide lottery based funding of the British Film Industry. This task is performed by a UK based charitable organization setup on the 1st April 2000 called www.film-council.org.uk
